The Royal Yachting Association
Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course is a comprehensive, interesting and rewarding course.
This course is designed to give you an understanding of the essential navigation and seamanship skills required to safely undertake coastal and offshore passages, both under sail and power.
The chartwork exercises and assessments will be completed using the RYA practice charts and harbour plans together with the RYA Training Almanac and assessment papers.
The RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore course covers traditional and electronic chartwork, the efficient use of tidal stream and tidal height information, pilotage and passage planning, modern sources of weather forecasts and their interpretation.
Basic sailing yacht and motor boat stability and design factors are also covered as well as the IRCPS - the all important international rules to avoid collisions at sea.
The full Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence is a highly prized and widely recognised qualification; successful completion of this shorebased element is based on attendance and completion of the exercises papers and 3 invigilated papers.
